Assistant Professor Political Science

Apply now Job no: 492597
Categories: Faculty
Department: Political Science

Davidson College: The Department of Political Science invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor specializing in Comparative and/or International Politics to begin July 1, 2018.  Demonstrated potential for excellence in and enthusiasm for teaching, active and high quality scholarship, and commitment to student advising and support are essential.  We are interested in candidates whose teaching and research interests include some aspect of comparative public policy – in health, education, social policy, immigration, private sector regulation, development, or other policy domains.  The candidate should be broadly enough trained to be able to contribute to wider course offerings in other comparative and/or international politics subfields, and possess a willingness to expand his or her teaching and research interests in response to emerging political issues. The search is open to expertise in any region of the world, including cross-regional comparison.  The ability to teach a comparative course on a specific region of the world would be attractive but is not required.   We also welcome applications from candidates with strong multi-methodological skills, and with a pluralistic approach to social science methodology; with trans-disciplinary interests that complement Davidson College’s growing inter-disciplinary programs; and with potential to contribute to the department’s existing strength in integrating liberal arts education with policy engagement.  The successful applicant will be expected to offer five courses per year (four in the first year of employment) including an introductory course in either international or comparative politics; upper-level courses and seminars; and, in rotation with other faculty,  our required research methods course.  Applications from both Ph.D.-holders and very advanced ABDs will be considered.  For additional information concerning the Political Science department go to http://www.davidson.edu/academics/political-science

The following materials are required: letter of application; curriculum vitae; graduate school transcript; a statement addressing the candidate's research agenda and interests; a statement explaining the candidate’s demonstrated or potential excellence in and enthusiasm for undergraduate teaching; and a statement outlining how the candidate’s teaching, service, and/or research might contribute to Davidson College’s institutional commitment to diversity and inclusion.   In the application please provide names and email information for at least three references who will be contacted directly to submit letters.  The deadline for receipt of applications is September 20, 2017. All application materials can be submitted at http://employment.davidson.edu .  Please note that the department will not be holding pre-interviews at the APSA conference in San Francisco.

Davidson is a highly-selective, nationally-ranked, residential, four-year liberal arts college located 20 minutes north of Charlotte in Davidson, N.C. Davidson is strongly committed to achieving excellence and cultural diversity, and welcomes applications from women, members of minority groups, and others who would bring additional dimensions to the college’s mission.
