Davidson College seeks an Investment Director who will work closely with the Chief Investment Officer (CIO) and the Investment Operations Manager across all areas of the $730 million endowment portfolio.  This is an attractive opportunity to be an integral and contributing member of a sophisticated and successful investment program with a progressive portfolio.  The Investment Director will be a generalist, but will spend a significant amount of time focused on hedge funds and private investments.  The Investment Director will interact directly with existing manager relationships and will help source, assess, and diligence prospective managers and strategies.  This individual will also aid in reviewing asset allocation and policies, preparing materials for Investment Committee meetings, and conducting analysis on various projects.  In addition, this individual must have the ability to build and maintain productive relationships and networks, interview managers in an intelligent and professional manner, and work independently, as well as part of small team.  This position requires a high level of responsibility, strong organizational and communication skills, excellent attention to detail, critical thinking and analytical aptitude, a positive work attitude, and a passion for investments and Davidson College. Davidson College has a progressive endowment portfolio, which has produced consistently strong absolute, relative, and risk-adjusted returns.  The portfolio has a significant allocation to alternative managers, especially hedge funds (over 40%) and private investments (30%).  The manager roster is relatively concentrated and includes many highly regarded investment firms.  All manager sourcing, due diligence, and recommendations are done internally (without a consultant).

Responsibilities include:

  • Monitor existing manager relationships and funds across all asset classes.  This includes conducting update calls and meetings, reviewing letters and reports, and attending annual meetings.  Travel is involved.
  • Source, track, assess, and diligence new funds and strategies across all asset classes.  Schedule calls and meetings, evaluate strengths and concerns, conduct reference checks, review pertinent legal and financial documents, develop recommendations, and write professional level manager memos.  Interact professionally with managers and others.
  • Proactively provide insights into macroeconomic discussions and new investment opportunities.
  • Help develop and maintain various reports and templates for internal use, the Investment Committee, and other constituents.
  • Generate, organize, and maintain electronic records to ensure institutional memory and support the annual audit.
  • Develop expertise with pertinent technology and database systems and engage with various vendors as needed.
  • Contribute to the ongoing evolution and enhancement of the investment office.
  • Interact with and present to the Investment Committee of the Board of Trustees.

 Requirements and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.  CFA, CAIA, and/or MBA preferred.
  • Meaningful and relevant work experience (minimum 3 years, though more preferred).  Experience evaluating and diligencing alternative asset class managers, especially hedge funds and private investment funds and preferably at a progressively oriented endowment, foundation, family office, fund of funds, or investment consulting firm.
  • Demonstrated responsibility, strong organizational skills, excellent attention to detail, and impeccable character.
  • Ability to assimilate disparate, abundant, and complex information and summarize key points and issues.  Ability to understand big picture concepts and relate them to the formulation of practical strategies and recommendations.
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Superior verbal, written, and interviewing skills.  Curious, analytical, problem solver, and entrepreneurial.  Common sense too.
  • Proficient with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.  Familiarity with Backstop database & reporting is a plus.
  • Passion for investments, including a solid understanding of alternative investments and economic factors.
  • Positive attitude toward work and favorable references.
  • Sincere interest in working in a small office environment and at Davidson College specifically.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment, as well as independently.
