The primary responsibility of the Assistant Director will be to assist the Resident Director (RD) with any tasks related to Davidson College's Semester in Shanghai program. Specific examples of these tasks are listed below. The Assistant will accompany the program participants to Shanghai and will report directly to the Resident Director. This is a temporary position with a starting date on or about August 20 and ending on or about December 20.  Additional work associated with pre-departure tasks may be necessary during the late spring as well as some work post travel period.

Responsibilities:

Student Support

Participate in all activities that are part of the program and travel with the group on all excursions and trips.

Remain with the student group unless leaving the group in the charge of the Resident Director (RD) or an approved alternate leader.

Act as adviser to students; be available to students in case of an emergency at any hour of the day when traveling; remain accessible to students during the entire program period. Stay in the assigned country for the entire duration of the program.

Assist RD in providing leadership and logistical support on field trips away from the host site.

Help RD to ensure that students know when and where they are to meet upon arrival at the program destination and for any excursions that take place during the program. Educate students regarding their responsibilities and liabilities if a flight or other form of transportation is missed.

Disburse per diem funds (if applicable) to students as directed by RD.

Assist RD in resolving problems or conflicts that may emerge among individuals in the study abroad group in accordance with the Davidson Student Code of Conduct. Coordinate with RD to make sure Study Abroad Office is notified of any student behavior problems, medical issues, or other incidents.

Administrative Support:

Attend Study Abroad training provided by Davidson College before departure.

Assist in financial management by keeping original copies of all receipts and keeping a log of expenditures for reimbursement purposes. For semester and academic year programs, submit monthly financial summaries to the Director of Study Abroad.

Upon return, work with Resident Director and Director of Study Abroad to reconcile the final program expenditures.

Assist RD in monitoring travel advisories and consular information sheets.

Keep Davidson emergency contact information, Davidson insurance information, and the U.S. Embassy or Consulate phone number on his/her person at all times. Be fully acquainted with the Embassy or Consulate evacuation procedures to be followed in case evacuation becomes necessary (http://www.travel.state.gov/ ).

Be informed about the Davidson insurance policy, the process for seeking medical/travel assistance, and the method for submitting health insurance claims.

Serve as the primary point of contact for students (contact before the RD for non-academic, non-medical and non-behavioral issues) and as the secondary point of contact (contact after the RD) for the host university, for Davidson staff, and for parents and/or legal guardians of program participants.

Carry a functioning cell phone for the duration of the trip. If group travels to multiple countries, ensure that cell phone service extends to all locations.

Work with RD to provide direction for any problems or crises that occur and keep in communication with the Study Abroad Office during such times.

Coordinate with RD to make sure Study Abroad Office is notified whenever a student receives medical care.

Be available to the Study Abroad office by email, phone, WeChat, Whatsapp, and/or Skype as needed while abroad.  

Minimum qualifications

A bachelor's degree is required.

Fluency in Mandarin is required.

The candidate must be responsible, organized, reliable, and energetic with excellent oral and written Chinese and English and demonstrated navigation and communication skills within the host culture(s), bookkeeping skills, and computer competence in Word, Excel and Outlook.

The candidate will have knowledge of and experience living in China.  

Preferred qualifications

The candidate will ideally have experience working closely with undergraduate students abroad and be familiar with standard practices in risk management abroad.

Earning opportunity: The total income potential for the Assistant Director on this program is approximately $8,000-10,000 depending on actual hours worked. Airfare, study abroad program related travel, lodging, and meals will all be covered separately from the salary.

The Assistant Director is expected to remain in country with the Davidson in China group for the duration of the program.

Because of the nature of the program, the Assistant Director must anticipate working and traveling on some weekends and after normal working hours.
