Hamilton McKay Endowed Professorship in Biosciences and Human Health

Job no: 492734
Work type: Faculty Full-Time
Location: Davidson
Categories: Faculty
Department:Biology

Davidson College (http://www.davidson.edu/) seeks an outstanding teacher-scientist in the biosciences and/or a field related to human health such as public health, health and healthcare disparities, environmental health, healthcare economics, bioethics, or aging to become the inaugural Hamilton McKay Professor. Appointment to this endowed, tenured position is open to candidates at the full or associate level. Davidson College’s departments of biology, chemistry, environmental studies, health and human values, and psychology provide possible homes.

The Hamilton McKay Professor will be an educator and scholar who will expand the College’s curriculum in a field or fields relevant to students who are committed to an excellent liberal-arts education while also considering or preparing for careers in health, wellness, and medicine broadly defined. This new member of the Davidson faculty will be eager to engage across and beyond campus – for instance with healthcare systems, other institutions, community organizations in Charlotte or the Lake Norman area – as part of a community interested in human health broadly construed and eager to advance both knowledge and practice.

Davidson’s outstanding faculty, students, staff, facilities, and support for research, teaching, and learning provide an ideal environment for educating students in alignment with the College’s primary purpose of assisting students in developing humane instincts and disciplined and creative minds for lives of leadership and service.  The Hamilton McKay Professor will advance Davidson’s distinctive model of undergraduate liberal-arts education, will extend the College’s curriculum by defining new spaces for undergraduate education and research, and will champion and model Davidson’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Candidate Profile

The Hamilton McKay Professor will be someone who is committed to excellence in undergraduate education in a residential liberal-arts setting and who can inspire undergraduates to embrace research as a central part of their education. S/he will be adept at opening up new areas of study and at bringing colleagues together across disciplinary lines and will be enterprising in fostering relationships with nearby clinical or other community organizations and with a range of agencies and foundations that fund research and education in these fields.

This endowed professorship is well suited for those who wish to continue or to revive a passion for inclusive teaching and training of undergraduate students, including those who seek to pivot away from focusing on graduate and postdoctoral training. The education, mentorship, and impact provided by the inaugural Hamilton McKay Professor will occur in the classroom, the lab, and the field.

Requirements for the role include a doctoral degree in an appropriate field, evidence of excellence in teaching and research, demonstrated commitment to the academic values of rigorous inquiry and intellectual integrity, and the ability to convey a passion for undergraduate education.  Candidates will bring the teaching and research accomplishments that merit tenure at the level of associate or full professor. As do students, staff, and faculty, the McKay Professor will embody Davidson’s commitment to integrity.
