Assistant Professor

Apply now Job no: 492841
Categories: Faculty
Department: History

The Department of History at Davidson College invites applications for a tenure-track position in East Asian history (assistant professor level).  The successful candidate will have PhD in hand by July 2019. Demonstrated or potential teaching excellence, as well as enthusiasm for undergraduate education, is essential. We welcome candidates who can build upon, enrich, and expand the College’s interdisciplinary curriculum, in areas including but not limited to environmental studies, health and human values, and digital studies.  The position will involve active participation in the College’s East Asian Studies program which, grounded in a growing Chinese language program and a study abroad program focused on contemporary China, embraces the interdisciplinary and transnational study of East Asia. Regular teaching load is 5 courses over 2 semesters, with 4 courses in the first year.

Davidson College is a highly selective liberal arts college located 20 minutes north of the thriving city of Charlotte, North Carolina, and less than two hours from the cultural riches of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  The successful candidate will have an opportunity to participate in the life of a collegial department and an intellectually and culturally vibrant academic community. At Davidson College, we believe the college grows stronger by recruiting and retaining a diverse faculty and staff committed to building an inclusive community.  In order to achieve and sustain educational excellence, we seek to hire talented faculty and staff across the intersections of diverse races, ethnicities, religions, sexual orientations, gender identities, ages, socio-economic backgrounds, political perspectives, abilities, cultures, and national origins.

Candidates should complete an online application at http://employment.davidson.edu and submit a CV, cover letter, statements of teaching and research interests, and a short statement outlining how their teaching, research, and/or service might contribute to Davidson’s institutional commitment to diversity and inclusion.  The system will request name and contact information for the submission of three letters of recommendation.  The application deadline is November 1.  Please address any questions to Jonathan Berkey, joberkey@davidson.edu.
