This position is responsible for the daily care of animals used in research and teaching according to the operating and regulatory requirements related to care and use of laboratory animals. Recognizes and reports clinical abnormalities and/or irregularities in animals. Learns the variations among laboratory animals and modes of disease control.
Maintains accurate records in accordance with outlined procedures. Reports areas of noncompliance to the Animal Care Manager. This position is classified as essential personnel and does require weekend and holiday work.
Participates in cleaning and maintenance of animal rooms, (terrestrial and aquatic species), sanitizing rooms and equipment as needed.
Provides routine care of research animals. Performs daily checks for animal health and welfare and ensures adequate supplies stocked in animal rooms and near bye labs. Receives and stores materials and supplies. Must be able to lift 50 pound feed bags.
Monitors and reports on environmental rooms and housing conditions.

Maintains accurate and prompt records in accordance with outlined procedures. Reports areas of noncompliance to the Animal Care Manager. Understands and complies with operating and regulatory requirements related to care and use of laboratory animals.
Assists in training of students in general procedures and animal husbandry. Other activities assigned such as the use of autoclaves, laminar flow hood, ordering of supplies, etc.
Associate's Degree required, or at least 3 years of animal care experience will be substituted for education. Work experience in animal care within an animal research facility is required. Training/certification in safety standards, chemical handling and animal care and use in research required. Excellent organizational, multi-tasking, and interpersonal skills required. Basic computer skills required.
ALAT or LAT certification is highly preferred.
