Digital Transformation Analyst

Department:    Technology & Innovation

Reports To:    Manager of Digital Transformation

“A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.”

Are you an IT professional or recent grad whose curiosity extends to every technological domain? Would you like to know how all of the puzzle pieces fit together, or better yet, would you like to help us connect them? Do you like to write scripts, automate things, and build useful widgets?

If so, you may be the right person to join Davidson College Technology & Innovation!

We are seeking a talented and creative technologist to join our team as a Digital Transformation Analyst. T&I’s Digital Transformation Team (DX) is a small group of engineers, developers, and administrators whose problem solving skills and holistic technological perspectives help to deliver Davidson’s most important strategic technology projects. We provide a little extra infusion of labor, a diverse skill set, and an outside perspective to select technology projects. We also try to make life easier for our colleagues by automating and streamlining the things that bog them down and prevent them from doing the important work they’d rather be focusing on.

Why does Davidson Technology & Innovation need a Digital Transformation Team? Because in the age of APIs, SaaS, public cloud, and an ever-fracturing technology ecosystem, it takes a team of generalists who see the whole picture and who can operate up and down the technology stack to solve higher ed IT’s integration, infrastructure, and user experience problems. Working alongside his or her IT colleagues, that is exactly what the Digital Transformation Analyst will learn to do.

A successful candidate for this position could come from many different technical and educational backgrounds, but fundamentally is a strong problem-solver who likes to work across technology stacks and disciplines as needed. He or she will likely have experience in scripting languages and APIs, both of which are key to stitching together and automating IT services. Finally, a successful candidate is not one who has already achieved technical mastery in the duties described below. Rather, a successful candidate is someone with exposure to many disciplines; someone who possesses a strong problem solving mindset and a self-directed learning philosophy. These traits will allow the candidate to flourish in the DX analyst role, and cultivate a modern skill set that will position them at the nexus of IT’s evolution in the higher education industry.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Digital Transformation team members and other T&I colleagues in short, narrowly scoped sprints as part of larger IT automation and modernization projects and initiatives.

  • Analyze, document, and transform legacy college business processes, especially those that span multiple administrative and academic departments, where holistic understanding of the process is lacking, and the process owner is unclear.

  • Develop documentation and training alongside the peers and colleagues who will ultimately assume responsibility for the work product of each DX sprint.

  • Learn and assist in the implementation of IT systems as part of larger strategic IT projects.

  • Develop automations for data exchange between systems, by building small APIs and microservices, by leveraging Davidson’s integration platform solution, and by creating offline scripts in PowerShell, Python, or the DX Analyst’s language of choice.

  • Develop automations for infrastructure provisioning, including Ansible playbooks.

  • Consult with colleagues inside and outside of T&I in the DX Analyst’s domains of expertise to advance the delivery of new IT services or strategic IT projects.

  • Maintain current knowledge of best practices and current and future trends in IT, including researching and experimenting with emerging technologies outside of scheduled sprints.

  • Maintain knowledge of applications, systems and infrastructure used to support the campus.

  • Share innovative and effective IT practices within Davidson, and where possible, the broader liberal arts and higher education community.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One or more years of relevant experience (in a professional, student employment, or self-taught capacity) in any Information Technology discipline, from Help Desk, to Systems Administration, to Development.

  • Familiarity with cloud services and Infrastructure/Software-as-a-Service (IaaS/SaaS).

  • A strong eye for UX, and a strong desire to create intuitive and useful products and processes.

  • Familiarity with RESTful APIs and web services.

  • Demonstrable proficiency in command line administration (Bash, PowerShell, or Windows Command Prompt).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with significant coursework in Information Technology or related fields of study - or equivalent industry certification.
  • Excellent problem solving and analytic capabilities with the ability to present complex ideas in a straightforward and understandable manner.

  • Demonstrable proficiency in at least one web development, scripting, or programming language (e.g. Bash Shell Scripting, JavaScript, PowerShell, Python, etc.)

  • Demonstrable proficiency in 2 of the following 3 operating system families: Windows, MacOS, Linux.

  • Excellent communication skills, allowing the DX Analyst to interface comfortably with colleagues and constituents inside and outside of Davidson T&I.

  • Project and time management skills, with ability to effectively manage competing priorities.
