Assistant Director for Collections Strategies

Davidson College seeks a collaborative, flexible, and forward-thinking individual to provide leadership in the development of transformative collection initiatives. The Assistant Director for Collections Strategies reports directly to the Leland M. Park Director of the Davidson College Library, and is responsible for the strategic leadership, development, management, and data-driven analysis of the library’s collections, resource sharing, and acquisitions services. This position directly supervises a team currently comprised of one Collections Strategist, one Interlibrary Loan Coordinator, one Acquisitions Specialist,  and student assistants. In addition to providing teaching and learning support to students and faculty, the Assistant Director for Collections Strategies serves on the Library Leadership Team, and helps develop, lead, and implement strategic initiatives. 

The Davidson College Library serves as a vibrant center of intellectual life at Davidson College. Recent initiatives include leadership in the Justice, Equality, & Community project funded by Mellon, the development of a robust research and digital media tutor program, and active participation in the College’s Humanities Program, which provides opportunities for students to contextualize their learning with library resources and special collections. The Library’s new Research & Design Studio brings together instructional designers and research librarians in support of technology enhanced assignments and digital projects, including Davidson Domains and the DavidsonX (MOOC) initiative. Librarians, Archivists, and Instructional Designers are active partners within the John Crosland Jr. Center for Teaching & Learning, located within the E.H. Little Library. The Library supports the annual Verna Miller Case Research & Creative Works Symposium-- a campus-wide celebration which showcases student scholarship across the disciplines. The Davidson College Library is a member of national and regional consortia including the Oberlin Group, Liberal Arts Collaborative for Digital Innovation (LACOL), and the Carolina Consortium. Primary Responsibilities


  • Guide librarians and staff to provide efficient and excellent services in the areas of collection development and management, resource sharing, ILL, and acquisitions services. 

  • Partner with direct reports to develop accountability-driven performance expectations and identify priority projects, providing mentoring and guidance; 

  • Coordinate the acquisition and discovery of library resources, ensure timely access to resources, and enhance patron experiences through improved workflows; 

  • Lead data collection efforts to support decision making concerning the strategic acquisition, renewal, retention, and sharing of Library resources; 

  • Lead the review and development of policies, procedures, and guidelines for lifecycle management of collections in multiple formats;

  • Contribute to overall budget planning; oversee budget allocations, expenditures, and procedures for maintaining sustainable library collections;

  • Collaborate with other libraries and consortia to leverage innovative resource sharing opportunities; 

  • Participate in contract negotiation for electronic resources as appropriate.  

Collections & Acquisitions

  • Lead the development of transformative collection models to ensure the vibrancy of the Library’s print and electronic collections in support of the curriculum;

  • Manipulate and analyze varied sources of collections-related data to make recommendations for improvement of collections, support accreditation reviews, and other administrative purposes as needed;

  • Oversee workflows, policies, and procedures for the efficient acquisition and access of materials;

  • Oversee interlibrary loan activities, both lending and borrowing of materials and associated expenditures; 

  • Provide oversight for the management of vendor relationships, including review and coordination of new and existing service agreements; 

  • Collaborate with the Scholarly Communications Working Group to lead the Library’s participation in national and international open access and open scholarly publishing initiatives;

  • Collaborate with the Research, Learning, and Outreach Group to ensure efficient management of course reserves and other front-line services; 

  • Develop and maintain appropriate webpages. 

Teaching & Learning Support 

  • Build strong relationships with teaching and learning partners across the College to identify resource needs. Actively communicate with colleagues about resources, departmental collections-related policies, and other relevant projects;  

  • Assist the community with questions related to fair use, the use of copyrighted materials, public performance rights, and Creative Commons licensing;

  • Facilitate campus-wide initiatives around open and equitable access to information;  

  • Provide research instruction, workshops, and consultations as appropriate; 

  • Coordinate and/or perform special projects and perform other duties as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent combination of related experiences, education, and training. 

  • Significant experience in the development, management, and systematic analysis of the library’s print and electronic collections, resource sharing, ILL, and acquisitions. 

  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex sets of data for resource management, access, and assessment.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects, adjust workflows, set priorities, work under pressure, be thorough and accurate, follow tasks through to completion, and meet deadlines. 

  • Strong communication and data analysis skills. 

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong record of management and administration of a department or service, with demonstrated ability to articulate vision, identify strategic directions, and expertly manage a high-performing team.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of systems/tools such as ALMA and ORACLE BI. 

  • Extensive experiences in the scholarly communication realm, including open access, copyright management, and research data management. 

  • Ability to think holistically about how patrons discover, access, and utilize library resources. 

  • Evidence of increasing scholarly and professional achievement.
