The Department of Religious Studies at Davidson College seeks candidates for appointment to the Holmes Rolston III Chair in Religion and Science, a full-time, tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank. Appointment to begin July 1, 2022. We seek an individual with the potential and desire to become an outstanding teacher-scholar and who will engage undergraduate student interest at the intersection of religious studies and the emerging field of environmental humanities. Priority will be given to candidates with the demonstrated potential for exploring the relationship between religious cultures and scientific understandings of the natural world, transcendence and immanence, nature and supernature, the status of nonhuman and human animals, and/or descriptions of and ethical responses to the climate crisis. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence in introductory and advanced courses, creating connections with Environmental Studies, and mentoring a diverse student population.

We encourage applications from candidates who approach the study of religion and the environment from a variety of methodological and/or disciplinary perspectives, such as ethics (including comparative ethics), comparative cosmologies, theology, history, etc., and who complement existing departmental expertise in some monotheistic religious tradition. Our current course offerings in monotheistic traditions include an array of topics related to Christianity (ancient context, early, and Reformed), Islam, and Judaism. We especially encourage applicants with a specialization in Catholicism, Orthodox Christianity, or world Christianities.

As a member of the Religious Studies faculty, the holder of the Rolston Chair in Religion and Science will teach courses within their expertise that satisfy departmental requirements in the areas of  Traditions; Ethics, Theology, Politics, and Society; and/or Text, Media, Interpretation. Teaching or research experience in these areas will be viewed favorably. The Rolston professor will also serve as a core faculty member in the Environmental Studies department, responsible for teaching Environmental Humanities (ENV 203) in rotation. Therefore, the ideal candidate will have the demonstrated potential for interdisciplinary teaching and research, especially in environmental studies. Other Religious Studies courses taught by the Rolston professor may support the environmental humanities requirement for Environmental Studies majors and minors. Additional potential contributions to the Environmental Studies department, including mentoring of capstone projects, are welcome and will be viewed positively. The Rolston professor’s willingness to teach courses that satisfy the College’s graduation requirement in Justice, Equality, and Community is an additional asset.

Apply online only at To ensure full consideration, please submit complete application materials by November 1, 2021. Requested materials include a detailed cover letter that links the candidate’s training and experience with the details of this position. This letter should have discrete sections describing: 1) candidate’s teaching philosophy, illustrated by examples from their experience or training; 2) candidate’s research interests as they pertain to the focus of this position; and 3) an explanation of how the candidate’s teaching, research, and/or service might contribute to Davidson’s institutional commitment to diversity and inclusion; plus a C.V. and three letters of reference.  Inquiries may be sent to Dr. Anne Wills at
