Assistant Professor of Africana Studies and Latin American Studies
Job no: 494248
Department: Africana Studies
The Departments of Africana Studies and Latin American Studies at Davidson College seek to hire a tenure-track faculty member at the Assistant Professor level beginning July 1, 2023, in the area of Afro-Latin American Studies. As a department and a college, we are committed to diversity and inclusion, and we especially welcome candidates that have benefited from, contributed to, or created programs directed toward diversity and inclusion. As the result of fundraising efforts by the College, the new colleague in this position will belong to a cohort. The Africana Studies department is conducting three tenure-track searches this year, building on several recent hires.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. before the start of the appointment. Successful candidates will be able to teach Africana Studies 101, Latin American Studies 101, and capstone courses in both fields, as well as a variety of cross-listed courses at the intersection of Africana Studies and Latin American Studies. Preference will be given to applicants with expertise in Black sexualities and/or health and healing. The ideal candidate will enhance existing offerings in both departments. The teaching load is five courses each year (four courses in the first year).
Candidates will be evaluated on the basis of their preparation for and interest in teaching and establishing a research program at an undergraduate institution. Multiple parts of your application may highlight your preparation in these areas; however, we ask that every applicant submit a cover letter addressing: (1) your interest in an appointment in the Departments of Africana Studies and Latin American Studies at the Assistant Professor level at Davidson College, (2) how your education and/or professional experiences align with developing an independent, original research program that will involve undergraduates, (3) your commitment to teaching introductory and capstone courses in Africana Studies and Latin American Studies. Please expand on these ideas further in the other application materials requested: 1.) your CV, 2.) a statement of teaching philosophy that includes a brief description of one upper-level course you would like to teach, cross-listed with both Africana and Latin American Studies, 3.) a statement of your potential or past practices supporting diversity and inclusion in research, teaching, and/or service, 4.) a research statement. The employment portal will ask for the names/contacts of three references; they will not be contacted until the semifinalist stage. Please visit www.davidson.edu for additional information about the area, college, and departments. Preference is given to applications received by November 15, 2022.
Potential applicants are welcome to direct any inquiries to Dr. Dan Aldridge, Search Committee Co-Chair, firstname.lastname@example.org. Qualified applicants should apply online at https://employment.davidson.edu.
