Assistant Professor in Arab Studies (Tenure-track)

Apply now Job no: 494523
Categories: Faculty
Department: Arab Studies

The Department of Arab Studies at Davidson College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Arab Studies. We seek applications from candidates who research and teach one or more aspects of Arab culture, with preference given to candidates focused on the modern period. We welcome applications from candidates whose work falls within any field in literary, cultural, and/or media studies. Native-level fluency in Arabic is required, as the successful candidate must be prepared to teach advanced Arabic content courses in the candidate’s area of specialization, as well as the language sequence in Arabic. While not required, research proficiency in a second language spoken in the Middle East--such as Hebrew, Turkish, Persian, or French--would be given preference, as it might expand a candidate’s ability to advise a range of student projects in Arab Studies.

The successful candidate should be on track to complete the PhD by July 2024 and will demonstrate a record of excellence in doctoral research and experience in undergraduate teaching. We will make the first selection of candidates based on our evaluation of the statement of teaching philosophy, with a focus on evidence of potential for, or experience with, inclusive pedagogies and the ability to effectively teach a diverse range of students. The successful candidate will also demonstrate potential for producing excellent scholarship over the course of their career. Required materials include: 1) a cover letter that describes how the candidate’s training and experience fit with the description of this position, 2) a brief statement of teaching philosophy, offering evidence of potential for, or experience with, inclusive pedagogies as well as the ability to effectively teach a diverse range of students, 3.) a brief research statement describing the candidate’s scholarly trajectory and plans , 4) a C.V., 5) names of three references willing to submit letters of recommendation by the later deadline of October 15.
