We are seeking a talented, creative, and innovative technologist to join our Infrastructure team as a System Administrator.  At Davidson, we’re always working to rethink and transform IT from the inside out, and this position will play an important part in our continued journey.  In addition to helping support today’s modern desktop, Windows and Linux server environments and related infrastructure, we’re counting on this position to learn and implement new technologies to benefit the college and its students.

The ideal candidate for this position will have experience administering and engineering desktop and/or server solutions, a willingness to learn about automation/orchestration platforms, cloud services and next-generation technologies to further enhance a modern IT infrastructure.  We will consider candidates with a variety of types of technical experience in this area, but will ultimately look for a strong technical aptitude, some prior desktop or system administration experiences, a desire to learn new technologies & skills, and a willingness to challenge yourself.

Position Summary

The System Administrator is responsible for day-to-day system administration of physical and virtual servers, engineering desktop solutions, troubleshooting issues and problems, patching server and desktop systems, and, in collaboration with other members of the T&I staff, design and implement new technology solutions to be managed and maintained by Davidson College’s Technology & Innovation department. The System Administrator serves as a member of a team that are subject matter experts in the areas of system administration including Windows and Linux operating systems, networking, desktop engineering, virtualized server environments, cloud-based solutions, automation and orchestration tools, and backup/recovery systems.

As a member of the T&I team, the Systems Administrator is expected to uphold the department’s mission to “drive digital transformation that advances Davidson’s primary purpose” and contribute positively to a culture of collaboration, transparency, empathy, innovation, and accountability within T&I.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

System Administration (80%)

  • Assist in building, maintaining, patching and updating servers, endpoints, and systems applications on Windows servers and endpoints as well as on our Linux servers, including zero-day/time sensitive response to security vulnerabilities.
  • Assist in supporting server infrastructure including hypervisors, storage arrays, backup clients/targets, and other infrastructure required to support T&I services.
  • Provide support for campus-based applications and systems (including application and file servers, Active Directory, DNS/DHCP, web servers, campus card, printing and LMS environments).
  • Design and engineer Windows and macOS desktop images for deployment throughout the campus.
  • Utilize and support availability and performance monitoring systems for T&I.
  • Assist application teams in supporting middleware services including web application tiers, load balancing/reverse proxy technologies, and identity/access management.
  • Perform project management duties as necessary for projects within areas of responsibility.
  • Assist in coordination as needed with outside providers.

Systems Management & Design (10%)

  • Participate in projects and operational activities to modernize T&I infrastructure through automation and orchestration.
  • Provides specific detailed information for hardware and software selection.
  • Assist with infrastructure engineering efforts to leverage APIs and open architectures to make T&I infrastructure and systems highly available, flexible and frictionless.

Consultation and Engagement (10%)

  • Consult regularly with T&I staff and departmental users to evaluate if developed solutions are being used to their fullest advantage and yielding the greatest possible efficiencies.
  • Maintain current knowledge of best practices and future trends in enterprise applications and participate in user communities, professional associations, and conferences to share expertise and learn from others.
  • Prepare and provide status, activity, project updates and reports, and other communications to T&I leadership and campus constituents, as needed or requested.
  • Generate reports needed for effective systems management or to support T&I KPIs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree or two years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience managing and supporting Microsoft Windows Server or Windows desktop operating systems in an enterprise environment.
  • Basic understanding of Linux operating systems.
  • Basic understanding of public cloud (AWS, Azure) technologies and capabilities.
  • Rudimentary experience with scripting technologies (PowerShell, Perl, Python, etc.).
  • Ability to troubleshoot and interact effectively with end users and a vendor support offerings.
  • Ability to balance system security with the needs of a variety of stakeholder needs.
  • A ‘can-do’ attitude to challenges; energized by change and thriving in team-based work.
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and customer service skills and ability to establish good working relationships with a wide range of people within an academic community.
  • Basic project and time management skills, with ability to effectively manage competing priorities.

Desired Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelors or advanced degree in computer engineering or computer science.
  • Three or more years of relevant experience (beyond that listed above as a minimum qualification).
  • Familiarity with VMWare ESX, Xen/Acropolis, or Microsoft Hyper-V virtual server environments.
  • Understanding of storage area networks and replication/backup solutions. Experience with file operations and file storage (such as CIFS, NFS, NIS, Samba, and iSCSI).
  • Prior working experience using public cloud (AWS, Azure) technologies including techniques for interleaving cloud resources with premises-based infrastructure
  • Previous experience in higher education and familiarity with its common academic and business processes.
  • Familiarity with Windows middleware including IIS web tier.
