The Assistant Director for Civic Engagement & Bonner Scholars is a full-time, 12 month Student Life professional within the Davidson College Center for Civic Engagement reporting to the Director of Civic Engagement & Bonner Scholars.

The Assistant Director provides oversight for programs such as the summer Education Scholars program and campus-wide events like the Community Involvement Fair and Celebration of Service. This person also plays a central role in coordinating programs and events in the center, including the Bonner Scholars Program. The Bonner Scholars Program is part of a national Bonner Program network headquartered at The Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation in Princeton, NJ. The Davidson program began in 1991 and supports 80 students in a four year service and leadership program, with summer and scholarship elements.

The Assistant Director plays a central role in coordinating events and programs in the center, including the annual Community Involvement Fair and Celebration of Service, as well as maintaining relationships with community nonprofit partners and updating the GivePulse engagement platform.

Furthermore, the AD serves as the primary point person for Center for Civic Engagement communication through a weekly newsletter and ongoing social media (Instagram, Twitter and Facebook).

Duties and Responsibilities

Program Oversight

  • Education Scholars
    • Create materials to publicize the program and recruit both partner host organizations and student interns
    • Select host organizations and maintain relationships with community partners throughout the summer and academic year
    • Hire and advise summer interns, including the planning and implementation of weekly discussions and enrichment activities
    • Coordinate logistics for including intern housing, stipends, transportation, speakers and meals
    • Design, develop and implement evaluations for students and partners, in addition to planning a closing showcase of student learning
  • Bonner Scholars Program
    • Work with the Program Director to design, facilitate and assess the educational model and structure for the program including weekly meetings that foster leadership, critical reflection and other skills for the Bonner Scholars that align with the Bonner developmental model
    • Provide ongoing mentoring and advising to Bonner Scholars, including a structured one-on-one meeting with half of the scholars at least once per semester
    • Plan and lead periodic service trips and retreats involving travel to other locations
    • Monitor students' completion of hours and other program requirements and develop accountability plans for students who are not meeting those requirements

Programming & Event Coordination

  • Plan and implement the Community Involvement Fair to connect students with local nonprofit organizations, including publicity, partner communication and all logistics
  • In consultation with the Center for Civic Engagement team, plan and implement the center’s annual campus-wide spring Celebration of Service (service leadership awards) event including the nomination and awards processes and evening program
  • Support collaborative programming with departments across the division like the Center for Diversity & Inclusion that focuses on the intersection of civic engagement and social justice issues

Communication

  • Monitor and respond to the opportunities form used by nonprofit partners throughout the year
  • Compile information on upcoming programs and events to share in a weekly multi-audience newsletter
  • Design and implement social media strategy, including communication with followers and staying up to date with current trends
  • Input opportunities onto GivePulse platform and provide trainings on use to community partners and students

Student Leader Advising / Leadership Development

  • In conjunction with other staff in the Center, advise service-based student organizations within the Civic Engagement Council (CEC), including the Alternative Breaks program.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in higher education, nonprofit management, student affairs or related field is required.
  • A minimum of 2 years related professional experience working with students in the area of community engagement
  • Experience with program development and assessment.
  • Ability to build relationships with a wide range of audiences including nonprofit partners, students, staff, faculty and families.
  • Strong understanding of individual cultural history and willingness to be open and respectful of other cultures.
  • Solid commitment to the success and well-being of youth.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Appreciation for the role that liberal arts institutions play with the community.
  • Familiarity with webtools and social media
