Web Hosting and Accessibility Fellow

We are seeking a class of 2020 or 2021 graduate to join Davidson College Technology & Innovation as a Web Hosting and Accessibility Fellow.
In this one-year position, you’ll work with faculty and staff throughout Davidson to modernize a number of websites and properties in use throughout the campus. You’ll assist faculty and campus departments to migrate old websites to new hosting platforms, while working to improve the accessibility of the sites. You’ll help us modernize a critical part of our technology services infrastructure and make an impact for future students, faculty and staff.
Knowledge of web development in platforms such as WordPress is very helpful. You’ll learn other skills you need on the job, including how to ensure that websites are accessible to persons with visual and other sensory impairments. As time and your interests permit, you will be able to gain exposure to other web technologies including API-driven development and integration.
As a Davidson Fellow working on a close-knit team with other technology professionals, you’ll get the support and training you need to grow and be successful. Please note that T&I staff, like most Davidson College staff, are currently working remotely, so this position is open to eligible persons in most parts of the United States; however, candidates are expected to be generally available during U.S. Eastern Time Zone business hours.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Inventory and assess legacy Davidson-owned and operated web sites and recommend migration to WordPress, Google Sites or other hosting options
Working with T&I technical staff and the accessibility project manager, develop and implement migration plans to frame-out, migrate, test and move to production legacy websites in new hosting environments
Collaborate with faculty, departmental staff and others on migration plans and approvals
As needed, migrate content (HTML, images and other assets) from legacy sites to new platforms
Learn and use scripting capabilities and automated remediation tools to support site migration processes
Develop working knowledge of web accessibility frameworks like the W3C’s WCAG 2.1
Assist in making non-HTML content (such as PDFs) accessible and compliant
Train faculty and staff on content management platforms for maintaining their websites going forward
Excellent problem solving and analytic capabilities with the ability to present technical ideas in a straightforward and understandable manner
Excellent communication skills
Project and time management skills, with the ability to effectively manage competing priorities (including in remote work scenarios)
Some knowledge of website development and maintenance in common content management platforms (such as WordPress)
