The Matthews Center for Career Development (Matthews Center) has an opening for a creative and impactful Assistant Director to join the team. The Matthews Center is a highly dynamic team committed to providing leading-edge career and fellowship exploration, preparation and outcome-oriented programs and services. This innovative team is dedicated to working collaboratively, with each other and the student body, in addition to partnering with campus and external stakeholders to provide best-in-class support and direction to our students. 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Reports to an Associate Director in the Matthews Center and serves as a resource for colleagues related to science and health professions career development.

  • Coaches domestic and international students on career management and professional skills in one-on-one, small, and large group settings. Provides support for all phases of the career, graduate/professional school, and fellowship search lifecycle with an emphasis on students pursuing the industries of life science, physical science and health professions.

  • Supports and amplifies the recruiting success of external partner organizations in the industries of life science, physical science and health professions, with targeted focus on developing experiential learning, research, and post-graduate employment opportunities.

  • Plans, delivers or co-leads the implementation of career education (knowledge- and skill-building) including workshops, panel discussions, large scale conferences, and e-learning/media, under guidance and in line with Matthews Center priorities, working closely with the Premedicine and Allied Health Professions department for healthcare-related activities.

  • Cross-promotes and participates in campus-wide events related to career development in the sciences and health professions.

  • Collaborates with the office of Alumni and Family Engagement to strengthen Davidson Connect and build a network of alumni and friends who are committed to providing mentorship and professional opportunities for students interested in the industries of life science, physical science and health professions.

  • Represents the Matthews Center on the Council of Alumni Healthcare Professionals (CAHP) serving as a liaison between alumni, Alumni & Family Engagement and the department of Premedicine and Allied Health Professions.

  • Maintains working knowledge and documentation of employment and graduate/professional school outcomes and trends for science and health professions students.

  • Measures success, tracks data and analyzes results.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in counseling, higher education or field related to the sciences or health professions preferred

  • Experience with undergraduate student advising (in a liberal arts environment) OR professional experience in the sciences or healthcare field preferred

  • Proven relationship building and management skills with multiple internal and external stakeholders; ability to develop a network of supporters across multiple career disciplines and geographic locations 

  • Sensitivity to and ability to operate in a cross-cultural setting 

  • Able to fulfill evening and weekend duties
