The Davidson College Fellows program provides graduating seniors or 2021 graduates an entry-level, one-year or two-year term-limited position in an information technology field. Our purpose is to help you grow your talent and skills, while you help us solve technology problems for the college. Are you interested in technology’s role in our modern world and organizations? Want to help Davidson secure T&I technological future? Davidson is looking for someone like you.  We’re seeking a smart, fast-thinking, creative graduate from the Classes of 2021 or 2022 for a one year fellowship in cybersecurity, offering a chance to make a real impact at the college while you get valuable exposure to cybersecurity, one of today’s hottest career fields.

Who are you?

You’re a recent graduate with an interest in technology and want to learn more cybersecurity operations and threats. Maybe you’re the kind of person who helps your friends and family understand why they should always use a strong password (or a password manager) or why having two-factor authentication reduces risks. Or perhaps you have technology aptitude but have never explored cybersecurity before and think it might be an interesting career focus. Either way, in this Fellow position you can help Davidson with our security operations while gaining experience and exposure in a fast-growing career field.

What you’ll do

So what do we want you to work on?  

  • T&I and our external partners monitor our systems for security risks affecting our systems, accounts and networks -- you’ll support these processes, working directly and with colleagues inside and outside T&I to prioritize, track and ensure resolution of issues. This includes daily operational security work monitoring for potentially compromised accounts, computers and systems, network threats and more. You’ll also work with T&I’s Support Center to directly assess and respond to potential security threats like phishing as they come in, including working with students, faculty and staff on security issues, two-factor authentication, malware/viruses and the like as needed (~50%)

  • You’ll help out with a range of security projects to help improve our operations while gaining real-world project management skills (~40%)

  • And, you’ll review threat reports from our higher education and industry partners along with internal vulnerability reports to make sure our systems and network stay secure (~10%)

As a fellow and a recent grad, we don’t expect you to have experience with research computing, or possess all of the necessary skills on day 1. Your success is critical to our success. Rest assured that Davidson T&I is committed to investing the time and resources required to train and onboard all fellows. Eventually, if selected for this role, you’ll grow into the strong contributor we know you can be. This role can open doors to a wide range of next steps, from IT positions to opportunities at a national or university lab to graduate school.

Fellow positions are compensated at $35,568 per year and include many Davidson College benefits along with sick time and ten vacation days per year plus College holidays.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Intellect, drive, and a passion for making technology at Davidson better

  • The ability to learn quickly -- we’ll help you learn how technology systems are designed and integrated, and we want you to use that knowledge every day in the role

  • Someone who loves working with people -- developing policies requires great interpersonal skills, the ability to listen critically, to negotiate, and to build strong working relationships

  • Great communications skills -- help us build a security message that resonates across Davidson

  • An aptitude for problem solving -- that is, broadly the ability to understand how disparate elements in complex systems interact

Preferred Qualifications 

  • One or more years of relevant experience (student employment, coursework, or self-taught) in any Information Technology or Computer Science discipline.
