Dining Service Associate - Union Cafe

Dining Service Associate is responsible for all register operation, stocking and customer service in the Union Café, which is a fast-paced and excellence-focused dining unit on the campus of Davidson College. The Café is a quick service unit providing meals and grab-n-go options to students, faculty, staff, and guests 7 days a week, 7:30am-midnight during the academic year, so night and weekends will be required. During the summer, the Café is only open for lunch Monday through Friday, so work may not be available in the unit, however other campus work opportunities may be offered.  The Dining Service Associate position does require some register operation experience due to the fast pace and high volume atmosphere. This is a benefitted position offering access to Medical, Dental and Vision insurance, paid vacation and sick time accrual, and holiday pay.    

Responsibilities:

Register Operation:  Operate register during business hours by processing CatCard and credit card transaction with speed and accuracy.  

Customer Service:  Assist customers with ordering, questions about menu or grab-n-go items and Café policy.

Cleaning:  Clean dining room tables, chairs, service area, and empty trash receptacles as needed during and after services. Other cleaning task may be assigned by manager and/or shift supervisor. 

Stocking:  Put stock away and stocked in a safe and orderly manner. Food must be monitored and stored according to state laws with temperature and proper positioning in mind. Food must be rotated and pulled with oldest date in mind. Responsible for watching quality of the food and must have an eye out for spoilage, mold, bent cans, broken packaging, discoloration etc.

Other:  This position provides general support to the whole dining operation which requires working around industrial kitchen with heavy equipment, sharp utensils and cutlery, fryers and ovens; requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Work areas may be steamy, hot and sometimes have slippery or hazardous conditions. Brief exposure to freezing environment (walk-in freezer).  

Communication:  Responsible for communicating on a regular basis any inconsistencies within the unit or as it relates to operational performance to the supervisor. On-going feedback with the supervisor to eliminate mistakes and improve efficiency of operational procedures. Must relay scheduling conflicts, call outs in a timely manner, and any issues that are interfering with personal performance.  

Policies and Procedures/Special Projects:  Commitment and adherence to all policies and procedures from our handbook in Dining Services, and Davidson College. Any special projects assigned by the unit manager or supervisor. Adherence to all safety policies and procedures of Davidson College and the local, state and national authorities.

 

Required qualifications:

  • High School diploma or Equivalency 

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a high volume food service or retail outlet.
  • Knowledge of proper cooking techniques/methods, ability to operate kitchen equipment efficiently.
  • Vocational or technical training in Culinary Arts, knowledge of sanitation standards and procedures in food services.  
  • Knowledge of safe food handling practices and ensure compliance with state health guidelines

Sign on bonus in 4 installments:

1st payment - $250  with first full pay check

2nd payment - $500 in December 2022

3rd payment - $250 in  January 2023

4th payment - $500 on May 2023
