The Davidson College Biology Department invites applications for a tenure-track position in vertebrate organismal biology at the Assistant Professor level to help fulfill the College’s mission of equipping students with humane instincts and disciplined and creative minds in preparation for lives of leadership and service. We seek a vertebrate organismal biologist whose research explores the physiology, ecology, and/or evolution of non-human vertebrates.
We will initially screen applicants for their potential to advance institutional goals in diversity, equity, justice, and inclusion. We will then give preference to candidates with the potential for excellence in undergraduate education, and candidates with research programs that: focus on non-model vertebrates, include a field component, address multiple levels of biological organization, and/or apply interdisciplinary approaches. Teaching responsibilities include a rotation of organismal/ecological introductory biology (with lab), an advanced organismal-level course (with lab), biostatistics, and an additional seminar or research-focused course in the candidate's area of expertise, equalling an annual five-course teaching load (where courses with labs count as two courses). In the first year, new faculty have a reduced teaching load of two courses per semester. A Ph.D. in biology or a related field is required with postdoctoral research and teaching experience preferred. The successful candidate will develop an active undergraduate research program that we will support with start-up funds, a dedicated research lab space in a recently built science building designed to promote innovative teaching and collaboration, access to a staffed vivarium, and support for acquiring and administering external funding.
