The Davidson College Biology Department invites applications for a tenure-track position in vertebrate organismal biology at the Assistant Professor level to help fulfill the College’s mission of equipping students with humane instincts and disciplined and creative minds in preparation for lives of leadership and service.  We seek a vertebrate organismal biologist whose research explores the physiology, ecology, and/or evolution of non-human vertebrates.

We will initially screen applicants for their potential to advance institutional goals in diversity, equity, justice, and inclusion. We will then give preference to candidates with the potential for excellence in undergraduate education, and candidates with research programs that: focus on non-model vertebrates, include a field component, address multiple levels of biological organization, and/or apply interdisciplinary approaches.  Teaching responsibilities include a rotation of organismal/ecological introductory biology (with lab), an advanced organismal-level course (with lab), biostatistics, and an additional seminar or research-focused course in the candidate's area of expertise, equalling an annual five-course teaching load (where courses with labs count as two courses).  In the first year, new faculty have a reduced teaching load of two courses per semester. A Ph.D. in biology or a related field is required with postdoctoral research and teaching experience preferred.  The successful candidate will develop an active undergraduate research program that we will support with start-up funds, a dedicated research lab space in a recently built science building designed to promote innovative teaching and collaboration, access to a staffed vivarium, and support for acquiring and administering external funding.  New faculty members at Davidson benefit from a variety of support systems, including professional development opportunities, affinity groups, formal and informal mentorship, and more, as detailed in the full position description (https://bit.ly/3bwd3Yo).

Applications must be submitted through https://employment.davidson.edu by September 15, 2022.  The position will begin July 1, 2023.  Please consult the full position description, which includes application instructions and details on the evaluation process.  Complete applications should include five documents: 1) a concise cover letter, 2) a detailed CV with names and contact information of three references, 3) a statement describing the candidate’s approach to, training in, and/or experience in teaching, 4) an overview of the candidate’s proposed research program, and 5) a statement describing the candidate’s potential contributions to Davidson’s institutional commitment to diversity and inclusive pedagogy.  We will initially screen applications by evaluating statements of potential contributions to Davidson’s commitment to diversity and inclusive pedagogies, after which candidates who advance will receive a full review of all submitted materials. The form will ask for the names/contacts of three references, however, they will not be contacted until a short list has been decided upon. Chair Kevin Smith welcomes inquiries at kgsmith@davidson.edu.

At Davidson College, we believe the college grows stronger by recruiting and retaining a diverse faculty and staff committed to building an inclusive community.  In order to achieve and sustain educational excellence, we seek to hire talented faculty and staff across the intersections of diverse races, ethnicities, religions and worldviews, sexual orientations, gender identities, ages, socio-economic backgrounds, political perspectives, abilities, cultures, and national origins.
