The Dance Department at Davidson College invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Dance, beginning July 1, 2023. Applicants should have a terminal degree (MFA or PhD), a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate pedagogy, and a desire to teach dance practices and Dance Studies in a liberal arts environment.
We seek a dance scholar/practitioner with a dynamic physical practice and an active creative/research agenda, who will bring new courses into our curricular offerings and collaborate with faculty and students in expanding our vibrant campus dance community. The successful candidate will teach five courses a year (four courses in the first year), including courses in the current curriculum (Introduction to Dance Studies, Dance Composition, or Dance Repertory, for example) and original classes for the schedule. To contribute to the departmental commitment to teaching at the intersections of dance practice and theory, proposed courses will include:
- a clearly defined dance practice (field open, but must be in diasporic, hybrid, or non-Western forms), which is taught alongside its socio-historical context;
- dance-centered courses that draw upon the candidate’s areas of artistic and/or scholarly research and expand the current curricular offerings
We are especially interested in classes that situate dance in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary conversations (history, cultural studies, critical theory, performance studies, etc.), as well as those that situate dance as a discipline that invites conversations about diversity, equity, community, and social justice. We expect the candidate to participate in co-curricular production activities and mentor a diverse population of students.
