Overview

Davidson College and its consortium partners (Duke University, NC Central University, and MCNC) are building a set of research computing services for small colleges and minority serving institutions statewide. We’re building tools that enable faculty and students at these institutions to learn from, analyze, and make new discoveries using high performance computing and ultra-fast networks, large datasets, along with advanced math and statistical software. We’re looking for a current graduate student to serve in a support role and assist faculty (as well as students) at Davidson and statewide, learn how to use these new technologies and improve their classroom and research experience.

Interested? Read on.

Who are you?

You’re a graduate student with an extended interest in higher education and research. Perhaps your current academic work involves software like STATA, Python or R, and you are comfortable with workflows which analyze and draw concise conclusions from information. You’re confident that these tools can improve teaching, learning and research and you’d like to help faculty and students at other institutions understand how they can best be used. Fundamentally, you’re interested in how you can further explore the intersection of science, analytics, and technology as you progress in your graduate work.

Meet the Academic Technology team

We’re a small group of technology analysts with diverse personal and technological backgrounds working to build better systems for teaching and learning - including helping faculty and students make better use of research computing capabilities. We’re part of a Duke-led consortium called NCShare that has been awarded nearly $1.4 million by the National Science Foundation (NSF-OAC-2201525 and NSF-OAC-2201105) to build out several statewide services for small private colleges and historically black/tribal colleges and universities. These services include:

  • A research networking capability (NCShare Science DMZ) to allow faculty and students to exchange data with other researchers and labs worldwide.

  • A compute cluster (NCShare CaaS) to allow easy, on-demand access to tools like RStudio, Jupyter, and standard HPC utilities by thousands of students and researchers across the state.

  • Other supporting services to make it easier for our students and faculty to collaborate with counterparts at other institutions.

In this grant-funded role, you’ll help with outreach to faculty and researchers at NC colleges and universities; helping them extract value from the NCShare Science DMZ, assist in developing documentation and training material for the services, and support the overall project needs in connecting NC researchers and students to these cutting-edge resources.

Even as a graduate student with exposure to the relevant software, we don’t expect you to have experience with research computing, or possess all of the necessary skills on day 1. Your success is critical to our success. Rest assured that Davidson T&I is committed to investing the time and resources required to train and onboard all staff including this graduate assistant. Eventually, if selected for this role, you’ll grow into the strong contributor we know you can be.

Note: This position’s work may be performed on-site at Davidson College or may be performed remotely, but all work duties must be performed within the State of North Carolina. Occasional travel (once per quarter) at employee’s expense to Davidson’s campus may be required. Any travel to other NC campus locations as required for NCShare program duties will be reimbursed.
