The Africana Studies Department at Davidson College invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Black Ecologies beginning July 1, 2023. Applicants must have a PhD in Africana Studies, Environmental Studies, Anthropology, History, Sociology, Political Science, Geography, Public Health, or a related discipline by the start date. As the result of fundraising efforts by the College, the new colleague in this position will belong to a cohort. The Africana Studies department is conducting three tenure-track searches this year, building on several recent hires.

We seek an interdisciplinary scholar who specializes in Black Ecologies, an exciting, interdisciplinary field that engages topics such as the legacies of structural racism, environmental crises, and disaster capitalism in the U.S. and around the African Diaspora. We invite applications from scholars who not only attend to the historically patterned ways Black communities are affected by environmental crises, risks, and destruction, but also engage issues of community resilience, Black sustainability, cultural resources, or restorative justice. Successful candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate pedagogy and a desire to teach Africana Studies in a liberal arts environment.  The successful candidate will be expected to teach Africana Studies 101 and the Senior capstone in a rotation with other Africana colleagues. We are also interested in candidates who can offer Black ecology courses that appeal across departments and/or courses that incorporate community-based learning initiatives. Candidates will have the opportunity to offer courses that contribute to college initiatives such as Writing 101, the Justice, Equality, and Community requirement, and/or lab science courses. The course load is 5 courses per year (four courses for the first year).

To apply, visit: https://employment.davidson.edu. Complete applications should include five documents: 1) a 1-2 page cover letter, 2) a detailed CV, 3) a statement describing the candidate’s course interests, approach, training in, and/or experience in teaching, 4) an overview of the candidate’s proposed research program, and 5) a statement describing the candidate’s potential contributions to Davidson’s institutional commitment to diversity and inclusive pedagogy. While we ask for the names/contacts of three references, they will not be contacted until a short list has been decided upon.

Review of applications will begin on October 14, 2022. Search will remain open until filled; for full consideration, be sure to have your application submitted by that date. Inquiries about the position can be directed to Phia Salter, Search Co-Chair, (phsalter@davidson.edu).
