The Assistant Director for Recruitment and Training (ADRT) is a 12-month, live-on staff member in the Residence Life Office at Davidson College.  As a member of the Division of Student Life, the ADST will join a competent, committed team who cares deeply about students and actively works to promote a welcoming, socially just environment for all people.  The ADST, with the Area Coordinators (AC), serves as a front-line responder in campus emergency situations, is often required to work non-traditional hours, including evenings and weekends, and works closely with a diverse student population.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. STUDENT LEADER  SELECTION AND TRAINING – lead department in the recruitment  and training of student leaders 

    1. Develop, plan, and coordinate the implementation of a comprehensive Residence Life Leadership Training, including the beginning of the fall and spring semesters, summer student leaders, and coordinating all student staff in-service known as Community Gatherings.

    2. Develop, plan, and coordinate the implementation of the student staff recruitment process.

 

  1. GENERAL DEPARTMENTAL PROCESSES – participate in the overall management of the residence life office through leadership in departmental processes.

    1. Through the use of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), coordinate departmental initiatives about students.  Assist Housing Assignments Coordinator with the First-Year Pairing Process 

    2. Plan RLO professional development for the department with the approval of the Associate Director of Residence Life

    3. Assist with most aspects of the housing assignment process – including lottery and room selection and first-year roommate pairing, and hall placement

    4. Attend and participate in weekly Residence Life staff meetings, team meetings, annual retreats, and other gatherings as needed

    5. Support Associate Director with Residential Education

    6. Assist the Associate Director in training Area Coordinators

 

  1. EXTERNAL COMMITTEES – work with divisional and institutional partners to further established goals and initiatives

    1. Represent RLO on various divisional and institutional committees as needed

    2. Opportunity to serve as a Holistic Advisor to support up to ten incoming first-year students between orientation and the declaration of academic major 

    3. Attend and participate in monthly Student Life meetings, annual retreats, and other gatherings as needed.

 

  1. STUDENT LEADER SUPERVISION – recruit, select, train, supervise, evaluate and facilitate professional development for 15-22 student leaders.

    1. Directly supervise one Peer Supervisor, a student position that directly supervises 5-10 student leaders who support  

    2. Directly supervise departmental graduate intern (e.g. ACUHO-I) during summers

    3. Partner with Residential Education Team to develop individualized and intentional action plans for personal, professional, and communal growth, as well as leadership development for residential community

    4. Meet weekly with student leader direct reports to evaluate hall environments, student concerns and behaviors, hall trends, and programmatic offerings while assessing the overall community health. 

    5. Provide ongoing job training and team development for residential teams 

    6. Provide goal setting, mid-year evaluation, and year-end evaluation for each student leader direct reports

    7. Offer monthly professional development opportunities for departmental student leaders.

    8. Assist student leaders in responding to student issues, including roommate conflicts and physical, emotional, identity, or psychological concerns.

    9. Directly manage area student leader duty process.  Advise or assist staff in responding to concerning incidents or potential policy violations in and around the residence halls.  

 

  1. AREA SUPERVISION – manage daily operations for specific residential areas

    1. Serve as the primary lead on the maintenance and upkeep of residential spaces

    2. Assist with housing operations such as room condition reports, key management, and room changes.

    3. Respond to facility concerns in an ongoing way via the work order process and furniture replacement.

    4. Perform monthly facility inspections on each residential facility.

    5. Facilitate the health and safety inspection process for residential area 

    6. Manage residence hall opening and closing at the beginning and end of each semester.

    7. Serve in the Live-in On-call rotation, advising student leaders, responding to serious incidents on campus, and going to the hospital to support students as needed.

    8. Work with departmental, divisional, and institutional resources to create a learning outcome-driven program plan to meet the specific needs of the residential area 

    9. Adjudicate first offense alcohol incidents.  Meet with residents who violate policies and standards to discuss behaviors, adjudicate or refer as appropriate, and follow up as needed.  Document through the Maxient Conduct system.  

 

  1. ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES – 

    1. Affinity Group Support – provides support and guidance to residential students of specific identity based on current student representation  

    2. Summer Responsibilities - participate in departmental or divisional initiatives and efforts to support the Davidson College community during the summer months (May-August).  Lead Summer Housing program, including supervision of summer student staff and ACUHO-I Intern.  

    3. All other secondary duties as assigned to the needs of the department of Residence Life, the division of Student Life, and Davidson College

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Master’s Degree in Student Personnel, Counseling, or related field required.  Minimum of three (3) years of experience working in residence hall programming and residence life administration (professional level) required.

  2. Competency in Student Learning & Development, Social Justice & Inclusion, Advising & Supporting, and Personal & Ethical Foundations required.   

  3. Event planning and management experience preferred.

  4. Exceptional organization, communication, and counseling skills.

  5. Experience in student development, or related field.

  6. Professional manner/demeanor; positive image and tidy appearance.

  7. Willingness to work with a team and accept various levels of responsibility.

COMPENSATION:

Compensation includes competitive salary; professional development funds; full College benefits package; furnished college apartment including full utilities, free high-speed internet connection, and basic cable; reserved parking space.  The ADRT is permitted to have pets (maximum two).

Work Environment:

The Residence Life Office at Davidson College consists of a team of competent professionals who are committed to student learning and care about students and each other.  The staff includes an Associate Dean / Director, Associate Director, Assistant Director, Housing Operations Coordinator, Facilities and Budget Coordinator, Office Coordinator, three Area Coordinators, and roughly 70 student staff members.  The Assistant Director position reports to the Associate Director of Residence Life and is an integral part of the RLO team called upon to assist in all areas of the program.  Hours are non-traditional, and weekend work is required.
