Multilingual Writing Assistant Professor of Practice

The Davidson College Writing Program is pleased to announce a search for a Multilingual Writing Specialist and Assistant Professor of Practice in Writing Studies to help develop individual and course-based multilingual writing pedagogies and support programs. The Multilingual Writing Specialist will report to the Director of the John Crosland, Jr. Center for Teaching and Learning (for student support work, working closely with the Writing Center Director) and the Writing Program Director (for teaching)
. The position will join a vibrant Center for Teaching and Learning which serves as the College’s hub for academic support services and faculty development.
The successful candidate will work with both students and faculty to coordinate and enhance existing multilingual writing support resources and to build faculty capacity around multilingual writing pedagogy and teach two first-year writing courses yearly. Professors of Practice are non-tenured, but renewable positions with support for scholarship and the possibility of rank advancement. The initial contract is for two years. Candidates with some experience teaching multilingual undergraduate writers and at least a Master’s Degree in a relevant field (e.g., English, Composition/Rhetoric, Writing Studies, Applied Linguistics, Second Language Studies, Language and Literacy) are invited to apply.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teach 2 writing-intensive classes each year in the College’s First-Year Writing Program
- Work one-on-one with multilingual students across the curriculum (an estimated 10 hours per week)
- Assess and advise entering international student writers about their strengths and concerns in academic written English
- Work individually with faculty in support of individual students and multilingual pedagogies
- Create professional development offerings around multilingual writing pedagogy and support for faculty and student writing consultants
- Contribute to the broader field of multilingual writing pedagogy, which may include traditional academic scholarship, non-academic publications, presentations at professional conferences, program assessment, and/or partnerships with community organizations.
- Work closely with the Writing Program Director and Writer Center Director to support ongoing programs and create initiatives to support multilingual writers
- Participate in writing-related assessment initiatives
- Work collaboratively with professional staff in support of multilingual students
- Collaborate with other academic student support areas in the Center for Teaching and Learning, including tutoring programs, academic access and disability resources, and the E.H. Little Library
