The Betty and B. Frank Matthews II '49 Center for Career Development (Matthews Center) has an opening for an Assistant Director for International Career Development. This experienced professional will join the dynamic Matthews Center Team team, committed to providing student-centered career exploration and career management programs and services. The Matthews Center strives to be a national leader in career development by providing students hands on support at a liberal arts college. This growing and innovative team is dedicated to working collaboratively, with each other and the student body, and partners with various campus offices and external stakeholders to provide the best-in-class support and direction for our students. The successful candidate will have a keen understanding of career development and student learning, a strong commitment to the liberal arts, and demonstrated skills engaging stakeholders through highly effective communications and programming.

The Role:

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Build and leverage a network of domestic and international employers who offer internship, job shadowing, and full-time employment to non-resident international students 
  • Collaborate with the Office of Alumni and Family Engagement to strengthen the Davidson Connect network and other resources to build a network of alumni and friends who are committed to providing mentorship and professional opportunities for international students 
  • Develop and maintain a list of graduate schools that are known for providing financial aid or scholarships to international students
  • Coach current international students and recent alumni in career planning and preparation activities including: career consultations;  internships; job and fellowship applications; mock interviews; job shadowing; and graduate school searches 
  • Oversee career education and professional development programming for international students 
  • Support funding initiatives to ensure proposed activities support career goals 
  • In coordination with International Student Programs, provide regular training for holistic and faculty advisors on international student employment 
  • Maintain working knowledge and documentation of employment and graduate school outcomes and trends, for international students; serve  as a resource for colleagues related to  international career development questions 
  • Analyze market trends regarding  labor and immigration law as they relate to non-resident career opportunities; incorporate findings into coaching and programming
  • Oversee the career center’s diversity and inclusion working group, establishing yearly goals and driving department strategy 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred 
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in building and maintaining professional networks in fields such as higher education, human resources, business development, fundraising/development, etc. required
  • Experience with undergraduate student advising (in a liberal arts environment) preferred 
  • Familiarity with U.S. student visa benefit programs such as Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT) guidelines; experience advising on immigration requirements and guidelines preferred 
  • Professional experience with multinational and foreign employers and/or employment databases for international students such as myvisajobs.com, GoinGlobal, or Uniworld 
  • Proven relationship building and management skills with multiple internal and external stakeholders; ability to develop a network of supporters across multiple career disciplines and geographic locations 
  • Sensitivity to and ability to operate in a cross-cultural setting including experience studying, working, or living abroad; bilingual language ability preferred 
  • Able to fulfill evening and weekend duties
